I’d been fancying a classic, but decent, burger for a week or so and so we, that’s hubster and I, decided to try Gourmet Burger. I like to eat my food from a plate with a knife and fork so it seemed like a good option; we also wanted to escape the great British summer downpour, so in we went. We were greeted and given a seat in the window. It wasn’t at all busy on a Sunday evening with only a few tables taken, including the one we had just taken up. Perhaps I should have taken this as a sign. The lady serving us told us how to order, which is to select from the menu and then get your table number and go up to the counter to place the order and pay at the same time. I selected a classic cheeseburger and fat fries with skin on and the hubster chose a chicken fillet burger with blue cheese coleslaw. I also had a pot of basil mayonnaise. We opted to share the chips, slaw and mayo. I ordered a cappuccino and hubs ordered lemonade. I was really looking forward to my coffee and the waitress told me, “Your cappuccino is just coming up,” yet when it came with the obligatory froth and coffee topping and I added a small sugar and took a sip, I immediately noticed I’d been given hot chocolate! It tasted ok although a tad too sweet but I couldn’t be bothered to mention it. Besides, I was looking forward to my burger, which was the whole reason we had come in. It looked ok when it arrived and distinctly average. I noticed the bun was just a normal, processed burger bun with sesame seeds on top, slightly toasted, but nothing gourmet about the bun. Moving on to the burger - I thought it lacked taste as was under seasoned; I usually moan it is over seasoned so believe me when I say it was bland. The chicken fillet was a bit dry and overcooked. It just wasn’t good and there was nothing gourmet about it. The fat chips were nice, light , fluffy and crispy. The basil and mayo sauce was lovely and complimented the chips (fries) really well. I also liked the ketchup/tomato sauce being on
Not impressed with the service or the state of the ladies toilets. The Camemberger was cold as were the fries that came in it, although the burger was rare as ordered. The chicken burger was really nice although my daughter would have liked to have known in advance that the house Mayo contained Dijon mustard, she doesn't like it. The food was okay but not worth the price.
