As Ethiopia was once an Italian colony, it is not surprising that there is an Ethiopian community in Rome, or that this community maintains restaurants. Africa is one of my favourite restaurants in Rome, especially when I want to try something other than Italian cuisine. (Italian cuisine is excellent, but sometimes I crave for something spicier.) The restaurant is located within easy walking distance of Termini Railroad Station, so when I am in Rome, I sometimes leave the station just to have lunch or dinner at Africa. The food is Ethiopian in character, and is well spiced. One gets the sense that some shortcuts are taken. The berbere is excellent in the wat dishes, but there could be more flavour of reduced onions. Similarly, the injera is not made of teff flour. The service is very quick and friendly. And the prices are quite acceptable.
When my wife and I travel, we often eat Ethiopian food where we find it, since we can't get it at home. Africa is a good example of the the reason why--it serves earthy, spicy, filling food at reasonable prices. We arrived for dinner around 9, and by 10 the place was completely packed, mostly with locals (always a good sign). I think we were the only tourists in the house. For those who are unfamiliar with Ethiopian food, many dishes are stews seasoned with berbere, a curry-like blend that is heavy on chili. You can order dishes spicy or not, but we always order spicy. Two entrees and tow beers set us back 30 euros.
