On the outside, Eis Ygeian looks like a typical kafeneio. A blast-from-the-past cafe with simple tables and chairs, neon lights and slightly decadent music. If it wasn't for the recommendation of a friend, I'd never pass its doorstep. Looks can deceive and in this case they do. It was a Saturday night, hot and humid, the weather that calls for ouzo. Most of the tables were full, mainly by families, and yet there was only one -kind and fast- lady who did everything. She cooked, she served, she took the orders. Apparently, the menu changes daily so they write what's on offer on a blackboard. This has a good and a bad aspect. The good aspect is that one knows that they eat fresh food daily. The bad one is that there are no prices. There are less than 10 options, all seasonal and freshly cooked. In fact, except for a couple of things, everything else was cooked when ordered. We had fried calamaris (fresh, not frozen), meatballs (the best I've ever had so far in a restaurant and I'm not exaggerating), aubergine rolls with feta cheese (very nice, with a sweet and tasty tomato sauce that formed an interesting combination with the aubergines and the cheese), chips (real potato, crispy and salty), fried anchovies (fresh, fresh, fresh) and boiled octopus (cooked al dente, with a splash of vinegar, cut in bite-size thin slices) and two small bottles of ouzo. My only complaint is the oil in the calamaris. There was a lot. Calamaris -like all fried stuff- should always rest on a piece of kitchen roll for half a minute before they reach the plate and the table. Other than that, everything was simply perfect. Home cooking all the way, served with good quality bread and very cold ouzo. Couldn't ask for more! The bill came a little above 40 euros. Not cheap but not expensive either, considering that -among others- we had 3 plates full of fresh fish and seafood. The service was immaculate, even if there was just one person doing it all.
