I just did not care for the food. The shrimp was mushy and while it was inexpensive, the two meals we ordered were not memorable. There are many places in the city, in a similar price range to go back. In fairness to the restaurant, we did order carry out on small business day (every restaurant can have an off day) but I still don't care for it. We will not be returning. It really is a minus 3 restaurant but the help was friendly.
I frequented Ben Wah often when I lived in Pacific Heights. It used to be a great, inexpensive alternative to Eliza's just down the street. About a year ago, we got take out and after two bites threw out the entire $35 order. It was tasteless, greasy and unappealing. We assumed the real chef was just out on vacation...however it was disappointing enough for us not to try it again. Flash forward Christmas evening of 2011. We had just arrived from a flight back East and thought Chinese food was an easy option. Exact same experience!!! The fried Rice was a dark brown due to a heavy had with soy sauce...yet somehow it managed to be tasteless. The "chef special" Orange Chicken and Beef with Green Beans was burnt and chewy. The only edible thing we had were the egg rolls and they were cold. Once again $30 down the trash shoot. There are way too many Chinese restaurants in San Francisco to have to eat this junk. I wouldn't accept a free meal from here.
