Founded in 1659 for those visiting the vicinity, including Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Please try the Kyoto cuisine cultivated for its inhabitants for the last 350 years.
This place has been in business since 1659! This is a very traditional restaurant, where you sit in a private tatami room and are served by a kimono-clad hostess. The food was excellent but you shouldn't expect modern. Ingredients were very fresh and well selected. We liked this dinner much better than at another Kyoto restaurant with a celebrity chef. Highly recommended for someone already experienced with Japanese kaiseki who would like to see the older style. I really hope these folks get enough business to stay open another century or two. I fear that most people are in too much of a hurry or looking for the latest thing to appreciate the care and tradition that goes into a place like this.
This restaurant is a bit different, there are no open dinning room, its all private room, therefore a reservation is for sure needed. You also need to provide them with a budget and maybe request type of food that you wanted. Than, they will serve you the food to your liking. Food are prepared quite detail and sophisticated. The waitress of my room spoke good English, and service is great for sure. The room I had is a normal dinning room setting of 4. But there are also Japanese sitting elsewhere in the restaurant ( I am not sure how many private rooms in that restaurant), by the look of their size, there must be over 10 different size and shapes, and am sure no room are the same). Utensils they use is nothing of fancy, but you feel its matching the food requirements. Sake and beer will be served at extra cost. An 8 course meal for 2 is around is around YEN25000 included tax and service fees. ( Again you set the budget ).
