Found this place after the reviews here gave it a glowing report (& that I don't like cabbage so wanted Negiyaki) & thankfully we did read them because it's not easy to find. It's on the main temple road in Gion but nothing says what it is except a small piece of paper with something like 'Okonomiaki served here' There's 10 seats, around the hot plate & we were the only Westerners in there. It's amazing, fresh ingredients, great saki & has spoiled us for any Negiyaki since.
This restaurant is a truly typical place. You can go pass it without noticing as it's so discrete. When you're on the sidewalk, you see almost no signpost, only a small piece of faded paper reading "we are yakisoba and okonomiyaki restaurant" along with some other ones in Japanese. It's really tiny, the traditional Japanese way: no more than 8-10 people can gather along the teppanyaki counter, in the small 3-4 meter wide room which, nevertheless, has a small corner for your baggage! I had astonishing beef yakisoba, cooked directly on the counter. The only downside is that I'd rather had the large sized portion but I'm the well-eating kind... The Chinese couple next to me ordered okonomiyakis which looked just heavenly. The two women (mother and daughter?) running this place really are amazing cooks and guests for the most of them seem to come here on a frequent basis. This place is a bit away from the tourist area of Gion, on the transient avenue down the temples, but it's really worth the detour.
