Having breakfast in the Herb Centre Café made me feel very good. They have nice smoothies and different vegan/vegetarian sweet and savoury dishes to choose from. I had a zucchini-chocolate-cake and a warm apple-coconut-pineapple muffin. They both were vegan and gluten-free which is not that easy to find in NZ! Perfect for the health conscious and/or vegan traveller. :)
We are newbie vegetarians, so after a few days of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and Birchermeusli, we decided to venture out to see what vegetarian (and gluten free) fare we could find in Christchurch. We read about The Herb Centre in the Cityscape summer/2015 magazine, so we decided to walk over there from the CBD to give it a try. On the outside, the place looks small and says "dispensary" on it. My boyfriend and I are from Colorado in the U.S. and we immediately thought because it said "dispensary" that it was a pot shop. How American of us! We started to walk away to find something else, but I said, "let's at least go in and give it a look", so we did. Are we ever happy that we did. Don't judge a book by it's cover. This place is charming, welcoming, clean and the food is the best we've had in New Zealand, and probably anywhere - and it's vegetarian!! A place like this makes me want to become a better cook, a better person and a more optimistic vegetarian. I had the Rösti with salad and my boyfriend had the lentil cakes with salad. It sounds a bit plain on the menu, but wait'll you get the plate delivered to your table!!! The "salad" turned out to be a mixture of delicious side salads and some greens with a delicious vinaigrette dressing. There was a potato salad, and a beet salad - all so delicious. The Rösti was served with a chutney that made the whole plate sing. I can't say enough about this place, except that we will go back before we leave - several times. I will never forget the local and delicious meal (and meals to come) that we had at the Herb Centre in Christchurch, New Zealand. Compliments to the chef!
The Herb Centre is quite an interesting place to pay a visit. With one room entirely dedicated to different herbs (which you can buy) and the other a cafe, it's a place you can spend quite a good amount of time. Their smoothies are delicious and can be made with non dairy milk. The have a wide range of options on their menu and cabinet too but it is rather basic. They label their food allergens on the menu really well and there is plenty of gluten and dairy free options. I did find the service to be a bit slack, they're great when they're talking to you and you have their attention but the drinks we ordered took a while to come out and then the food was forgotten about completely. Overall though a decent place for a quick bite to eat.
I went to the herb centre this afternoon for an important business meeting. On entering the waitress (blond hair european) was on her mobile. She barely looked up to welcome us! it was more of a what do you want, we asked if they were still open as there was a broom propped up on one of the tables. She answered by saying yeah (with a very unwelcoming look) we should of left then and there but i was too embarrassed. we ordered a tea and moved to the cleanest table which was covered in old food and flies. The tea was actually nice but we were bitterly appalled by the service and non welcoming filthy tables and customer service. Come on Christchurch we need to attract people not put them off!!!!
