We stumbled across this restaurant, whilst looking for another one in Kappabashi area near Asakusa. I saw a sign written in english and thought to try it. It is a quaint two storey space with white washed timber, a central timber table with tall stools and little pockets around the top floor and bottom floor where you can cosy up with a coffee or beer and chat with friends or a loved one. There is space for a DJ and lots of records shelved on the wall. A piano stands in the doorway. It almost feels as though you are walking into your best friends home. The owners, a young man and woman are very attentive speak a little english. Enough to translate their daily menu specials and answer any questions we had. They both were incredibly hospitable in that beautiful Japanese way. When we left after our second visit, they presented us with a small packet of coconut macaroons each. The food is really amazing. We had a beautiful curry on our first visit with fluffy white rice and simple garden salad. The desserts all look delicious, but we opted for the banana creme brûlée which was so melt in your mouth. I'd be interested to find out what their cooking experience is, because the food is very special. Our second visit we had a crumbed chicken dish and slow cooked pork. Both were divine. Prices for mains range around Y1100. Cafe Otonova only opened last year. They are on facebook (Japanese) but show some photos of the renovation and opening of the space. Opening times Monday - Sat 1200-2300 Sunday 12-2100 and closed Thursdays. I would highly recommend visiting Cafe Otonova if you are nearby Kappabashi street (Kitchenwares, knives, fake food) and feel like a change to the everyday traditional Japanese food. You will not be disappointed.
