Sushi Ya have a fancy selection of sushi Monday to Friday for if like me you are bored of salmon and avocado. They also make to order, their salmon rice ball is ridiculously good value but totally off menu. A small space to eat, but I take it home and pass it off as home made.
I visit Sushi Ya Burnside at least once a week, sometimes more often ! The manager knows me as "vegetarian rice ball no yellow pickle" although I am also known as "large green tea latte". Fastest rice ball makers around, I don't even get time to read much of the Press while I wait, but it's great that they have it there for customers. If you are lucky enough to get there between 11am and about 1:30pm they have a cabinet of very yummy "pick your own" items for only $1.50 each (fresh spring rolls, nigiri selection, etc). Also some nice snacks on the counter - edamame, gyoza dumplings, croquette patties, etc. Highly recommended, very busy local sushi place.
We have frequented this great sushi place since the opening week and being regulars that are greeted by name shows that Scott and his team are very conscious of the importance of positive interaction. In the last year, the team have introduced a cabinet with individual pieces all for $1.50 each. The favourite is the rice paper rolls or the spicy chicken Nigiri. Also in the cabinet are a variety of Inari and Oshi. Hot food is also on offer and is lovely in the winter months especially. The lunch packs of fresh vegetables, dumplings and miso adds to the overall variety of this sushi shop. Scott is also a very good barista, with his coffee being a crowd pleaser. We also have ordered several catering platters and these provide good value in a well presented round takeaway platter.
I'm gluten and dairy free, so sushi is good for me. I'm also fussy. I like sushi to be kept cool, dislike fatty Kiwi toppings like mayonnaise, like meat options that are not deep fried, enjoy it fresh and varied. I avoid sushi shops in big malls where they the turnover of older stock is not monitored and it's sometimes not kept cool enough (have seen too many folk get food poisoning over the years). So, I was surprised tasty, varied, fresh and made-on-the-premises sushi not far from me, plus a cabinet with interesting pieces that can be purchased individually. Also options of rice rolls and miso soup. Good prices. Is it as good as the best of Melbourne or Sydney sushi? No, its not, but I'll keep going back here rather than elsewhere in the city.
