I meet my Nan here quite often as she loves the garden center and I live in the area. But this is the only reason Ill go. The cafe itself is cute but the coffee is some of the worst Iv had. Also If your going to have a dog walking round a cafe they need to be fine with kids. The wee dog they have is cute but quite nippy.
I ate at portstone recently while in New Zealand visiting family. The menu is great and the staff friendly but I found sometimes simple things detracting from what could be great food. I had a hash brown and smoked salmon dish. Everything was lovely apart from the hollandaise that tasted like it had been extended by some sickly sweet supermarket brand. To my mind this is such a travesty. New Zealand has all these lovely fresh ingredients and it is ruined by someone trying to save a few cents on the dressing. Portstone is not expensive and they do good food but I really came away a little disappointed with the way they had spoiled what could have been an excellent dish. I should add that the other two dishes my friends ate were. Excellent. I do hope portstone lift the game just a little and show off those lovely ingredients a little better. It's not too hard to do.
This is a local, I frequently visit. It is a great little coffee shop attached to a garden centre and gift shop. The decor - different seating arrangements, from booth seating, tables and chairs inside and out, lounge chair seating and high table and stools. Have a good choice if it is not too crowded. Polished concrete by the counter otherwise carpet throughout. An eclectic mix of sea faring and farming days all mixed together - gives this cafe a country cottage type of feel. Good choice of barista drinks - with different size cups. Frequent coffee goer card is available. Food - another good selection of food in the cabinet. Always looks good and fresh. Covered plates of scones and fresh made sandwiches and slices adorn the counter. A paper menu is also available. Varied dietary needs are met. Staff - come and go - on the whole are always friendly. Today I had the breakfast crossaint which was stuffed with crispy bacon, egg, mushroom pate and a tomato. Heated. Perfect. No complaints other than I wanted another one. Two drinks. $19. Plenty of parking. Added advantage of garden and gift centre. Some food from the cabinet would be enhanced with a garnish/ side salad. Check with the staff first.
I know it's only a cafe attached to a garden centre but the fundamental basic is to serve all the meals together. A chicken salad was completely eaten and it was 10 minutes later, before bacon and eggs and an eggs benedict even arrived. With 3 lunches and drinks at $75, its not a cheap option either. A long way to go to match food quality and service levels compared to other establishments at this price range.
If you want a family-run feel, in a lovely setting with a great range of food then this is your place. You aren't made to feel that you are an imposition by the staff; in fact they will accommodate tricky dietary requirements if possible. The setting in a nursery enhances the ambience, and the décor fits the setting. Lily the resident dog adds to the family feel. The best thing about Portstones Café for me though, is the fact that they have a great range of gluten-free food. You aren't faced with a wall of food that would be lovely, if only you could eat it, because their range of alternatives is extensive. This is a great place to catch up with friends or family, or hold a casual business meeting.
