O Mateus is a small neighborhood resto which serves typical Portuguese dishes and is frequented primarily by locals and regulars. Both the quality and quantity of their dishes are supreme. I had the Porco Alentejana, a dish that comes from the Alentejo region of Portugal and consists of marinated and grilled cubes of pork, clams, cubed french-fried potatoes, and some veggies on top. Primo, and so much so that I had to bring my wife to try it. On the second visit I had the cozido a portuguesa, the standard Portuguese stew of a large variety of meats and sausages, chorizos, cabbage, potatoes and carrots, and sometimes rice and beans. Exquisite. And not only is the waiter, Jorge, very friendly (speaks better English than I speak Portuguese), but the clients are equally friendly and happy to have a couple of appreciative foreigners in their resto. Note that one person may order the “meia dose” – half portion, or two or more people may easily share a full portion. Two half portions for two people will likely be more food that two can eat. I can strongly recommend O Mateus for the quality of food, great prices, and super-friendly people and ambiance. We will be going back whenever we can. It is possible that the restaurant is only open for lunch. Both our visits were at lunchtime.
