Visited on a Saturday for an early dinner/pre-theatre set menu. The place was lively & relatively full for 6pm. We had seen on Tripadvisor that there was a pre-theatre offer, and booked this directly with the restaurant - 2 courses for £19 0r 3 for £23. There is a great choice, albeit a couple of supplements for some dishes (e.g. Prawn Cocktail +£2). We had the prawn cocktail to start with - a large portion of prawns with some lettuce/tomato, a spiced cocktail sauce & served with breadsticks. For mains we had the asian chicken on cous cous & the sole with mash. Both mains were excellent, albeit for a guy I would suggest adding a side of veg to bulk it up. We opted for dessert, and chose the pear tart with vanilla ice cream & boozy butterscotch sauce. It has to be said the food was delicious, portions were no different to those eating off the main menu, & the setting was great. Not a choice for a quiet meal for 2, but a great buzzy atmosphere for a city centre venue. Will be back.
My wife and I were visiting the Ideal Homes exhibition and had time afterwards to find a restaurant for dinner before we headed back home on our train. So searching for offers we came across this one which was two courses and a bottle of wine for £29. Decided to try it out and to be honest we did not expect it to be the same standards to full price menu. We had eaten here before and knew what to expect from full menu. We were pleasantly surprised! Food was really good, well presented and a decent bottle of red wine. Waiter was very friendly and we reckon we will try it again soon!
My boyfriend and I had booked a table here to go for a meal for his birthday. The waiter who took our food order was lovely. The starters were pleasant enough. The problem started with our mains... We had both ordered sirloins, medium rare and two sides each to share. The steaks came and when my boyfriend cut into his, it was very tough and not pink in the middle at all. He cut into the middle of the steak to check and it was not pink either. Mine was cooked fine. We explained to the waiter that it was meant to be medium rare, he grudgingly took it away with no apology. The hostess then came over to advise us that was how this chef cooked his steaks but would get a fresh rare one. I explained that I had ordered my steak the same way and it was cooked much less than my boyfriends. Our shared sides were left, getting cold whilst we waited on his steak coming. The staff were not apologetic at all, in fact one waiter was really particularly rude and also the chef kept coming out and looking over, which made our evening very uncomfortable. Overall it was a really horrendous experience, I left very upset. I've had really good meals in Number 29 previously, however I will not be returning after that experience.
We had an excellent Roast Beef Lunch (£29.00 for two with bottle of wine). The meal was excellent, staff courteous and attentive and the ambiance was perfect. My brother was visiting and it was a family gathering. We all agreed it was a great choice and I will certainly be back.
