Stopped there this afternoon with my wife after leaving Santa Maria della Scala for a quick gelato & espresso. The bill was 20 euro, but after a day of hiking around without calories since breakfast I paid without really thinking. After we were eating I realized that we had been charged 2 euro for each espresso (which is a little high, but hey, we're in a tourist trap, right??) but EIGHT (OTTO!!) euro per so-so gelato. Then the waiter asked if we wanted our coffee right away (we did) and didn't bring it out until I went back up and asked again. So, bad service, bad prices, so-so gelato. We're not hard people to please either - we've been raving to each other about how great the highway rest stops are in Italy. Unfortunately in our position this was an impulse stop, so reviews here wouldn't have helped, but if you're reviewing the city before you go STAY AWAY from here.
Despite other reviews we found the service here extremely good and the food excellent. It's simple food done well. We had pizza and a sandwich with tea coffee and cakes afterwards. The pastry and tart were both excellent. Coffee and tea were both 3 euros but we had paid 4.50 for a coffee at il campo earlier in the day. We thought it was excellent.
We were very hungry and stopped in for sandwiches. We usually avoid places so close to tourist sites. We ordered a couple if panini which were exceptionally good. The real treat for me was the espresso I had after lunch. It was so rich and flavorful! As others mentioned, it seems expensive for what it is but the food and service were good.
