My review is about how difficult it is to find this place open. We were staying at the Aston Hotel that this place is suppose to service. It's not open for breakfast, not open on weekends or public holidays. We rushed back from Waikiki one night to have dinner there, it was about 7pm and the waitress said the kitchen's closed. Hence we were forced out into the streets of downtown Honolulu after dark, to try and find another place. The streets of Honolulu are not safe for tourists after dark.
This is a nice place for a downtown lunch. Have in the past had the poke salad. This time I tried the bento lunch special, which included a beef luau, like a squid luau, fish, brown rice, lomi, and a delicious haupia. Atmosphere is a sports bar. Service is decent.
Nice location in basement of the executive center downtown. It looked like a good, casual bar for dinner and a beer and to watch a game on the multiple big screens. Unfortunately, the waitress quickly made it clear that waiting on customers was a low priority. Once the food arrived, I was even more disappointed - greasy and mostly flavorless. There are many better downtown restaurants than this one.
While staying at the Executive Center hotel we enjoyed starting our evenings with a beer at the Hukilau. The crowd was mostly business people and we enjoyed conversating with the locals. The venue is small but very comfortable (air conditioned!). It's more of a happy hour/sports bar type of place but the menu was unexpectedly appealing.
