The behavior of the manager and staff is egregious. On Cinco de Mayo, they allowed a rowdy group of people to continuously thrash around and bang into our party and others while we tried to sit and eat. Finally, after being swatted by a member of their party, enough was enough and we told them not to touch us....at which point, some neandrathal looking creature from their party leapt up swinging at us threatening that if we spoke another word, we wouldn't "speak again." Bottom line, this party should have stopped being served hours before. The staff was being grossly negligent in allowing them here around their other customers. That's not the half. When I called the restaurant to discuss with their manager "Jimmy", he explained that today was a busy day, these things happen and he would not be comping our bill. This place is a 0 in terms of management and professionalism.
Found Fonda when looking for a Latin restaurant near Chelsea and the High Line. The hostess and wait staff were very attentive. The fresh-made guac was terrific. Tried the Rosalita (their house margarita with hibiscus) and the classic margarita, which were both solid choices. The highlight was the shrimp and scallops entree which the waiter suggested. Best I've ever had! All the food was so packed with flavor. The overall vibe is more for adults, but we took our 2 kids, and it was fine for them. (They loved it.) Highly recommend!
Perhaps it is the Latin food I'm used to getting in Atlanta that failed to prepare me for the real flavor found at Fonda. I prefer to think it is at testament to their desire to prepare quality food using great ingredients. Thanks to Restaurant Week, I took the opportunity try a bit of everything with my fellow travelers. Holy Guacamole (it was amazing)! The Spicy Blood Orange Margarita started everything off well. Then onto the first course chicken flautas. Just enough to taste and not too much to fill you up. For my main course, I went for the Carne Asada con Hongos. Cooked medium rare, the flavor of the meat, the sauce and the green beans married perfectly. Finally, a cup of coffee served with a French press and the budin de banana...banana bread pudding with home made whipped cream and a guava sauce. I needed the 12 block walk back to my hotel to keep from lapsing into a happy food coma. Being a small setting, I can imagine some people might not like the atmosphere. I didn't think it took away from the experience at all. It did make things difficult for the servers sometimes, but they still provided top quality service. I will definitely go back and recommend Fonda to anyone who happens to be in the area.
