Julie's birthday dinner and we had a lovely round table, perfect for 5 people. Near the entrance, and not over blessed with space, nevertheless we were comfortable and well served. Excellent food, a delicious octopus starter, perfectly prepared, and moist John Dory to follow. A fine cheeseboard and succulent chocolate dessert. "Dec" was there, but perhaps more tellingly for the food, so was Heston Blumenthal, and if he eats there.... Wine list not cheap, but a reasonable Gavi de Gavi and a very good Chianti Classico slipped down easily. And the grappa to finish was top quality. I hadn't been for over 20 years. My next visit will be soon.
It is some months since I last ate at Riva and it did not disappoint. The place was full and buzzing on a Monday evening, which says something - and what it says is excellent food served by well-trained and helpful staff in a pleasant understated setting. If you like northern Italian cuisine and are prepared to pay for lovely fresh ingredients and great cooking, you cannot do better. The Octopus with Borlotti Beans and Rocket was a terrific starter, for fish-lovers the Sea Bass was excellent and for meat fiends the ossobuco was tender and succulent. We finished with Apple Strudel to die for. Well done, Riva - there is good reason for your longevitiy in an area where restaurants often come and go.
