We went there 20+ years ago and it was memorable for the good. Our current experience is memorable the other way. They have way passed their prime and need to move on to other ventures. At lunch time there were only two other clients. While the waitstaff were friendly, the interiors are tired and the cooking uninspiring at best. For an average of $10 pp, they have strong competition and have simply not kept up. Sorry to say.
We went to Jimmy's on our first night in Hilo during our last visit to the Big Island from our home in Coquitlam, BC, Canada. The food is pretty good overall, with a fairly wide range of options on the menu. Service was a little on the slow side, but that was mostly because the place was busy (always a good sign!) and staff were over-worked. They certainly tried hard. The restaurant itself has a rather run-down feel to it - very "time warp", if you like that sort of thing, but could use a bit of sprucing up. That said, they do take-out as well, and that would be a very good option if your lodging is within walking distance, as ours was. We would go back for the food, but would consider the take-out option next time.
The water tastes gross. Food was okay, service is terribly slow whether its slow or busy. We have to wait forever. One of the waitresses was rude, she wouldn't help us. Not really a great dining experience
