A Chinese restaurant serving traditional Teochew food. The place is rather old but still well maintained and relatively clean. The Teochew steam promphet, 'hae zhor'(prawn roll), the braised duck were well prepared. The dessert 'or ni' (yam paste) was delicious too. Overall, the food is good and so is the service.
Wonderfully authentic Teochew cuisine. Unadulterated without unnecessary condiments. Steamed fish showcasing freshness. Chilli crayfish beautifully presented. Handmade pork rolls that's freshly prepared daily. Yam paste dessert "orh nee" made the old traditional way without modern brashness and light on the lard.
I visited this restaurant last night with my relatives to celebrate my birthday. I am a foodie and also a good cook but not a professional cook and it was the first time I visited this stall as I had heard some good and many horrible comments about it. I wanted to try out. This is my assessment of the dishes we ordered. (1) Double boiled winter melon soup. I have not tasted anything so flat in my life. Even my Indon maid cooked better soup many times better tasting than this one. (2) Steamed promfret. The fish was far from fresh and as a result it was almost tasteless. If I were the restaurant owner, I would rather not sell the fish if I do not have fresh fish to sell. (3) Fried cray fish. It was fried with eggs and lot of spring onion but unfortunately the cray fish was not fresh at all and in fact stale. (4) Fried shrimp rolls. It is just an ordinary dish with nothing to shout about. (5) Fish cooked with bittergod. It was a horrible dish. I think the worst mixed vegetable rice stall in Singapore can dish up better than this one (6) Fried sambal Kangkong. I have not come across something like this before. It was the worst dish for the night. The vege was tough and it was badly cooked. Generally most cze char stall can produce this dish satisfactory. (7) Green and white vege. This one I have no complain. (8) Pork in agar jelly. This was good, (9) Goose meat with pork and taukwa. This is a very average dish. Meat was tough and not juicy. The low cost taukwa tasted so much better than the meat. I don't know how much my relatives paid. Generally I would give cze char stall a rating of 5 out of 10. For this one I think 2 out of 10 is more than enough.
