There is absolutely nothing "fancy" about this place - far from it. But if you want a local breakfast place with the right amount of food and drink for way under average SF prices - this is it. Lots of local places are up to $15-20 for eggs and toast, but here you can still get a nice combo for under $10, including coffee! And the service is great! When there's only one person on a weekday morning, there's not much time for chatter, but the coffee cups stay full (nice to cut the sunset fog) and the smiles are genuine. You want local chatter, sit at the next table with a local. Definitely recommended.
We've been to Howard's over the years, probably coming here at least once a year. I used to live 3 blocks from the restaurant and the lines after 10-11 AM on the weekends reflect how it's managed to stay popular even if the place is a dive. This AM, we walked 30 mins to get here and there were 2 tables opened. One of the 2 tables had eggs and food all over the floor. The customer at the table next to us told us the folks before had kids who threw food around. I wonder what kind of parents these were and if they did the same thing at home. Filthy. And no one cleaned it up. There was only 1 waitress and one bus boy so service was really slow because they were too busy and there was not enough help. Hubby had the Eggs Benedict, it was OK. I've had better. He was happy about the endless coffee refills which the waitress amazingly kept filled even 'tho she was all alone. I did enjoy my glass of cranberry juice and corned beef hash slab with cottage potatoes and 2 correctly cooked poached eggs. Good, basic, non-fussy breakfast. $25 for both of us (with tip).
