A trip to Japantown is always on the list for my San Francisco visits. And Shabu Shabu is there as well. I have always gone to a place in the center of Japantown, but they were closed on the day I went. Seeing the sign, Home of Shabu Shabu, I went to Mums. The place was mostly deserted. The service was hesitant. The food was OK A pile of food was brought to the table by the reticent young server who seemed to be alone in the restaurant. I was given the cheapest chopsticks that money can buy. They broke almost in too and were far to short to be taking things from the boiling pot. I purchased their "all you can eat" offering. I was trying to get a similar variety as I am used to from the other place. They offer only one meat at Mums, though, unless you order all you can eat. I will not go back.
May 20 Since this is our first breakfast in San Francisco, we decided to eat breakfast here since it is located on the 2nd floor of our Kimpton Buchanan Hotel. Like a previous reviewer who wrote, there is no reason to have breakfast here unless to meet the neighborhood locals, avoid a longer walk, or cannot wait till the other places open. This cramped resto opens at 7:00 am. It is crowded immediately with tourists and businessmen dressed in suits. The decor is non-descript, but definitely cluttered and tired looking. I had the eggs benedict and she had the egg on English muffins. Both were huge and satisfying. The price is right -- $20. If you have a car, you should research other options.
I only know the Swiss version of Fondue Chinoise and was eager to try this similar dish from Japan. After an afternoon in Japantown we thought this dinner might be the perfect end of our day. It was fun, and the shabu-shabu is indeed a very social and great way of eating. Unfortunately, the quality of the food is not very convincing. You only get a pot of water and have to add spices yourself. I'd prefer an already prepared broth. While the beef was ok, the pork for example didn't look tasty at all. We gave it back, before we even tried it. Also, the decor could use a facelifting ... As I learned now after a little bit of research, there seem to be better places for shabu-shabu in San Francisco.
