I was delighted to find the Verlaine reviewed. This is a comfortable, no-frills, down-home bistrot in the 13th, close to the highlights of the historic Butte-aux-Cailles, a more interesting part of the 13th. The women working here are absolutely delightful, with heaps of humor and welcoming warmth and excellent service. Their menu changes and is featured on a blackboard daily. All the favorites show up and I have yet to pass by without seeing at least one thing that makes my mouth water. Parmentier, steak/frites, quiche, pasta, pork dishes, etc. Fixed price lunch is now 11 Euros and it comes in plentiful quantities. There is a long list of recognizable desserts, all which sound good (even though I pass on sweets) and wine is more than fairly priced. This kind of bistrot (and prices) are a real find. The 13th is still a good bet for such places and reminiscent of village France in many ways. It is not fussy cooking, nor are flavors sparkling or inventive. It is simple, good, traditional, down-home fare that is dependable and consistent. "very good" is a fair rating keeping in mind the cuisine and standard presented here.
Good food for a good price, don't forget it's still Paris! Located in the heart of St Ouen flea market you can stop at its tables to taste a goat cheese salad with basil bread, roasted chicken, burgers, salads etc.. With good wine from Bordeaux area. Waitresses fast and nice.
This little bistro is in an out-of-the-way part of Paris, seldom visited by tourists. The nearby rue de la Butte aux cailles has a number of restaurants and cafés, which were closed when we passed, late as usual for a Paris lunch. However, we just squeaked into La Verlaine, and were given a very nice lunch by a polite patronne who hardly looked askance at our lack of knowledge of Parisian dining hours! For an authentic, tourist-free look at Paris, this area is a very good place to start.
