I ordered a toast with salmon, coctail prawns and pesto plus salad. Really great. Also bought a red wine. The staff was very nice. Restaurant has a good atmosphere. You can watch french people in normal life :)
Maybe if you're not American you'll get good service. In the morning we had great service for a quick cup of coffee from a gentleman that spoke English well. So we returned later but to our dismay we got a different server who turned out to be a thief: after getting bill and getting receipt to pay he said the discrepancy was there is a ten euro minimum. Whatever dude, this morning we paid 5 euro's on our card for our take away coffee. Acted like he didn't understand English all of the sudden. I wouldn't give them one star if I didn't have to. Been all over the world and no one has gotten one star before... It was that bad!
We were looking for a cafe for a quick meal. Preferably structured towards French tastes (not always easy in Paris). We had rejected pizza joints, cambodian, chinese and indian restaurants and bars that would drum up something from the microwave. We wanted a bit of ambiance, well patronised by locals and a friendly welcome. To our absolute joy Cafe Basile fitted the bill. We were welcomed and presented with a menu that did have hamburgers - but also had traditional French menu items. We had the plat du jour - a steak tartare, "poele", lightly fried and with deep fried new potatoes and a bit of salad. Absolutely delicious. Wine came by the carafe. Good and inexpensive, water in a carafe too. Desserts were equally good. I had a pain perdu with caramel ice-cream. It's not fine dining, but it was really good value, everything beautifully cooked and presented. Great find.
