We revisited the SOUP Restaurant at Clementi Mall to have dinner. I reviewed this eatery in TripAdvisor last December 2015, and found that as before, the place was crowded. We had to wait in line some minutes for a table. There are a dozen other Soup Restaurant outlets spread out over the island so it’s quite a popular dining chain for many locals. We ordered the Claypot Tofu; Ah Kon Fan Shu leaves in mild chili sauce; The Samsui Ginger Chicken; Steamed Hand-chopped Minced Pork Pagoda with Salted Egg, and drank their home-made chrysanthemum tea. Service was a little slow, but we got our food on the table not too long after our order. The first dish was the Ah Kon Fan Shu leaves in mild chili sauce. Slightly oily, but not too spicy. This went down very well with the steamed white rice. The Samsui Ginger Chicken came next. The chicken meat was tender and succulent, eaten with a very flavorful, aromatic ginger sauce, crispy thin cucumber slices the chicken meat, self-wrapped in fresh crunchy lettuce leaves. The Claypot Tofu was a delight. Served in a claypot with a thick sticky gravy which was slightly too sweet for me, the tofu was soft and smooth. Finally the Steamed Hand-chopped Minced Pork Pagoda with Salted Egg dish came. This dish takes time to come as it has to be steamed. But the wait was worth it. The pork meat was fresh, not too saltish at all but crunchy in texture from the bits of water chestnuts adding a mild sweetness to the meat. There were only four of us, and the four dishes eaten with a bowl of steamed white rice were adequate to fill us up without feeling that we’ve under or over-eaten. The Soup restaurant is a nice place to have a family meal, with it’s cuisine of old Chinatown style home cooked food. With an ambience to match, it’s a great place to gather and dine. The place can be a little noisy, but there are a few private side cubicles for larger groups if you wanted some privacy. If you arrive closer to 8 pm, there’s no need to phone in a reser
