We went here extempore while looking for a place to eat. You have to take the elevator to the 8th floor to reach the restaurant. The staff was really nice and considerate. Although they didn't speak much English, they understood us very well, and took care of our needs. Me and my boyfriend got a private booth which was really nice! There's theee types of menus you can choose; exclusive, standard and light, and all of them are all-you-can-eat -menus. We took the cheapest one, but it was more than fine! All-you-can-drink -soft drink menu was 400¥ extra, but worth it. The meat was quality meat, and all the ones we ordered were delicious! In yakiniku -restaurants you cook the food yourself, as it is a part of the socialicing experience. The service was fast, and we had some ice cream as dessert. You had 90 minutes to finish eating, which was more than sufficient. If you leave too much food on your plate though, they will charge you an extra 500¥. It's understandable though. I truly recommend this place to everyone!! It was a great experience, and not that expensive (~ 5800¥ for two persons).
My companion and I ordered the cheapest tabehoudai and nomihoudai options and found it to be more than enough choices for our budget. Their English menu made it much easier for us to figure out what kind of meats we wanted to order. The provided sauces were delicious and the meats were a good value for what we paid. Unfortunately, we found ourselves waiting a long time for new orders to be filled, and at times we would press the button to call the waitress two or three times before we actually got a response, and would sometimes go ignored as waiters and waitresses assisted other tables, which ate into our precious 90 minutes to grill and eat our food. For the price, we couldn't really complain much, but we did feel like we weren't getting the most out of our experience for how little attention we were paid. Given the option, we would probably spend a little more money for tabehoudai sukiyaki or shabu shabu next time rather than coming here (we visited the one on Sanjo Kawaramachi). We would be willing to give the service another chance.
Still digesting the good food, went a few hours back, near Gion. It's a chain and they have an English website with a map, indicating 4 restaurants right in the city center. Basically all we read on Tripadvisor before going is true: it's a very good value and 90 minutes are enough. The difference between the 3 options is based on variety, but also on the quality of the beef choices. Honestly, we just couldn't order the stomach parts or the tongue, but the japanese couple next to us seemed to have leaner parts with the same 2500 menu... But it was delicious anyways, and I just loved their special miso sauce. My advice: just try as much as you can ;-)
