Came here on our last night in Niseko Had a special kind of set which allowed us to share a few dishes. Really enjoyable food and great service. Well spaced delivery of food. Lovely wines Really nice experience
We are usual costumers of Shiki and having a Bistro' just in the building have always been part of our booking decision, till this time: - due of "low season" no lunch is served in March. - we found the place completely closed for 1 day (apologies written at the entrance). - went to enjoy wine and coffee another evening at 10pm and the staff, all seated to chat, felt free to tell us "place is closed since no costumers came this evening". Well, with this level of service we are surprised you'll get any costumers in the future. Shiki should guarantee the guests a full catering service. This attitude is far from any decent hotel/residence. Complaints will be shares upon departures.
We saw Iki while shopping at the deli next door and decided to give it a go. We were a group of 8 and were there for an 8.00pm sitting. The menu is slightly confusing and the waitress confused us even further. We'd thought it was starters and mains, but then she told us most people got a few things to share - we ended up not really knowing what we were doing. The food was for the most part delicious - the pork belly melted in the mouth and had a subtle spicing that was divine. The oyster was out of this world and the tuna poke was a total delight. It disappeared in seconds. There were, however, a few things that didn't go quite right that left us a little disappointed. I actually quite liked the cod milt but we'd been expecting cod meat. I think if you are going to serve fish sperm then you need to be clear that that is what you are doing. Even the waitress wasn't really sure what it was and it left a few of our party feeling a bit queasy. I had the duck and mine was very good - for two other diners their's was cold. They sent it back. It came back on a hot plate with the vegetables wilted and still cold (they did at least handle it very well and didn't charge us for it). The scallops with Thai red curry were delicious but we were expecting a bit more of a curry rather than three scallops with a drizzle of sauce on the top (don't get me wrong, they were divine, but it was a starter masquerading as a main). It's quite pricey but we had a good time. It's shame that we had a couple of stumbles as it seems a lot of other diners have a had a great experience here.
Interesting menu not quite executed. Appetisers were generally well received (apart from a not clearly described cod millet tempura) as were friends' pork belly mains. Duck breasts came out cold, twice, but would probably have been nice if hot. Creme brulee satisfyingly thick and creamy but the cinnamon and star anise infusion not quite fitting. Nice ambience, beatiful presentation, friendly service (cold ducks were rightly refunded). However, at those prices the chef needs to nail the substance as well as the form.
