Located in the heart of city center (Anatolian side, Istanbul) at Haydarpasa central station which is over 105 years old by the sea and it seems like time has stopped there..The atmosphere takes you to somehere 60s. There are black and white photos of famous Turkish artists and singers of those days on the walls and playing their music low enough not to block you chatting with friends. There are live music nights that everyone sings along with the band; very cosy and lovely time you may spend. The concept is "meyhane" like Greek taverns so you will find alcohol and the very famous Eagean- Anatolian "meze"s are served which goes along perfectly together. Turkish people usually do not eat main dish and set the table with different kinds of cold and hot Mezes with "raki".You can find meat and chicken dishes everywhere else so, do not skip cold and hot Mezes; try and will not regret. The only thing is the serving staff may not be proficent in English, but you will experience how easily you will understand each other. The station is closed right now so you can also have a walk around the beatiful building with a sea view or abandoned cars and railways which are decorated by graffiti artists to take some pictures if you like... A bit sad to see a place so silent, abandoned, lonely which is used to be live and very crowded once...but definitely recommended to visit.
On our brief visit to the Asian side of Istanbul, we wondered around trying to find the recommendation for our hotel hosts. What we encountered was a great surprise and experience as there was a huge book fair and exhibit at the old train station. We noticed a restaurant and immediately requested an outside table with a view of the festivities. While the servers were not proficient in English, we managed to order from the Turkish menu. Earlier, we had stopped and had Turkish coffee and a treat so we were not terribly hungry. We decided to share a Shepherd's salad ("Tomato, cucumber, green pepper, onion, parsley with lemon juice and olive oil") and an entree, The Sultan's Favorite ("Diced chicken served over pureed eggplant (aubergine) with yellow cheese, covered in tomato sauce and served with grilled tomato and green pepper"). We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch along with Turkish beer and the excellent service. Later, we ventured inside the restaurant and noticed the walls filled with photos from the past including many actors and dignitaries. The owner who was an elderly man gestured that we take a photo with him. Everyone was very welcoming and we left thinking that we had found a treasure.
The restaurant is situated in old train station (Haydarpaşa) and it is 110 years old. Decoration is nearly old style, also they use one of the wall in the restaurant as a screen for projector and they play some old movies on the wall. It's really fantastic atmosphere. On the other hand, starters are really delicious and never need main course when I was there. If you would like to go there on Friday, Saturday or Sunday you have to make reservation. Price is little bit high but worth it.
Starters are fresh and nice but the rest is fair. You give about 110TL p.p. exluding main course and desert but including alcoholic drink and they don't even give a complimentary fruit, coffee or tea at the end of dinner which is done in nearly all of the fish restaurants. When i compare the food quality and price with many other fish restaurants this one is really so bad. I can never recommend here to anyone. Eating in a train station may look interesting but be sure that the place of the restaurant does not worth much to see or eat dinner.
