We have been here before so we knew what to expect and we weren't disappointed with the meal or the service. The food was delicious for tavern food and plentiful as well. It was easy to get a table early as the tavern filled up quickly after 12.30 for lunch.
4 of us went for dinner mid week so the place wasn't packed and we had good friendly service. One person had the special which was great value. The other meals were great tasting with good visual appeal and ample portions. The steak were apparently very good (I had fish)
Friday and Saturday nights the restaurant is understaffed. Sometimes you have to line up for half an hour to order your food. There are 2 cash registers but they only ever have 1 operating. Went there Friday the 11th and didn't have a booking but did get a table. Ordered meal straight away but had to wait about 45 mins before it was brought to the table. Service seems to have slipped under the new manager. Staff are friendly, do their best, work hard but are understaffed and the manager is not in sight. The previous manager used to come and help out at busy times and always had a friendly greeting for regular customers and made you feel welcome. We live locally and have lunch there every week and usually dinner once a fortnight and the friendly inviting atmosphere seems to have vanished.
Nine of us adults went there last Saturday night for dinner. The restaurant was about half full. However, the service was slow, painfully slow. We asked to have garlic breads before the meal. After about twenty minutes we asked where the bread was and it still took another twenty minutes to arrive. I could have driven home to Centenary suburbs and back in the same amount of time. The mains were hit and miss but some plates were returned half finished. It really is only pub food with higher prices. Some of the mains are just as expensive as some good restaurants. The worst aspect was nobody asked how the food was, especially given the fact that some plates were unfinished. There was no sign of anyone being in charge of the dining room. The fact you have to pay upfront really says it all and that they do not appear to care. So we left. We should have stuck to my own rule of not returning after my last visit but it was another group member did the booking. The one positive is the staff were reasonably friendly, hence the two stars. Otherwise, a one star.
