As a big fan of Asian food, I've tried many of Victoria's most hyped Japanese and Korean restaurants. Dollar for dollar, Korean Gardens is by far the best value in town, and it is now my favourite place for a casual Japanese meal. Atmosphere and clientele are both authentic, service is solid, food is quality and portions are good. After eating here at least 10-15 times in the past year, I've yet to have a bad experience. Definitely recommended.
I don't know why - but I typically expect authentic Asian food to be found near a downtown core. I never really gave this place much thought cuz it was in a more residential type area. I'm glad I decided to give it a go. The food here is great. I love Korean food and really love hotpot. None of us had hotpot last night - but we saw it at the tables around us and it looked wonderful. I had the bulgogi - it was the best I've ever had. The portion was large, delicious, hot, and reasonably priced. The chicken barbecue the same. Our meals came with miso soup, steamed rice, home made kimchi, and korean potatoes. All of it was excellent. The venue is typical mid-priced Asian, the service also typical of most mid-priced Asian restaurants - it's there if you want it but you generally have to look for it. The excellent food more than made up for any shortcomings, though, and I look forward to returning.
We really enjoyed this restaurant. Good looking dining room, great service, and delicious food. The waitress had very good recommendations, including for the vegetarians in our party. Miso soup and green tea are complimentary. Don't miss the kimchi fried rice and the bibimbap!
