Had a casual meal with friends here, lovely wine and tasty food, very friendly service and very on to it with separate payments which made us feel easy breezy and not like we were too much trouble. The venue is very cool, great fit out.
We reserved for a group of 7. Our service was great! They were quick to bring out food, however it all came one at a time as ready. Our group ended up picking off each plate as they came out. The music was so loud!! Having a conversation with the person next to you was difficult. It was incredibly cold (the a/c was blasting) and the seats were made of metal - equally cold! All in all, not what we were expecting. If you enjoy sitting across from someone while they eat food, sweet.
We learned about the Urban Winery and Brewing Company on the hop on hop off tour so we stopped in as a part the city side of the tour. An un assuming store front and location, you could easily miss it from the outside if just walking by. We recommend making it a stop in town, and if you are a local definitely plan a friend meet up here or a weekday after work date. They have flights of local craft beer for tastings, as well as a long list of some good Canadian wine for tastings. Who knew Canada had vineyards and good wine? This business is actually a partnership of three small businesses and in an old historic property. They brew beer there and it definitely has an urban, warehouse, loft feel to it. There is a good looking menu (we did not eat) and the smell was inviting(we had eaten a late lunch and could not eat). Our server was warm, friendly and knowledgeable about the wines, the regions and the beer. It would be great to have this my neighborhood at home. The prices for individual glasses was reasonable - but to take a bottle home would have been pricey. Check out the art in the ladies room! A fun, fresh place, stop in and get to know it.
A So-So Visit to the Winery I got a referral to the Vancouver Urban Winery from the Concierge at my downtown Vancouver hotel. A fifteen-minute taxi ride deposited me at an isolated location of Dunlevy Avenue. I was impressed with this large loft type restaurant, with walls made of brown wood, and sat at the bar. I had a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon (or "Cab Sav" in Vancouver Speak) and Pizzetta Margherita. The wine was un-remarkable but OK. The Pizzetta, however, was served cold, so I had it sent back for re-heating. I found the garlic spicing of the dish too exaggerated. Service at the Vancouver Urban Winery was friendly, but I saw the wait-staff drinking on the job, while filling drink orders. Some were highly engaged in conversation with other servers, rather than paying attention to customers. I would like to give the Vancouver Urban Winery another try before pronouncing judgment, and may just do so during my next visit to Vancouver.
