Discovered this cafe on day one of our stay and returned at least once every day! The customers seemed mainly to be office workers and construction workers getting breakfast/lunch to take out but there is a small eating area on the mezzanine where you can eat in. Breakfast choices range from bagels, eggs, bacon, avocado, omelettes, fruits etc etc We had breakfast for two (so full after!) with coffee for around $12-13. We often went back in the late afternoon and got a huge sandwich or salad to take away for dinner. We found the food here much better than any meal in a New York restaurant.
So, we really couldn't afford breakfast in our expensive Manhattan hotel and we're a family of three looking for a reasonable breakfast to start our day(s) of exploring NYC. We stumbled upon Café 42 1 block north of Pershing Square. They have a sit down area above the restaurant to eat with a big cooler of ice cold water available. I mostly had a toasted Everything Bagel with (copious quantity) egg and cheese (your choice- provolone, muenster, American, swiss, etc..) and a large coffee as did my wife. My 11 year old daughter usually had just the everything bagel with cheese and the available free cold water. Our breakfasts for three totaled under $13 with tax (in MANHATTAN) We were thrilled with this place. They also have food by the pound including many luscious fruits and vegetables, sushi, BBQ ribs, fried chicken, and many other entrees and sides. We ate there for dinner a few times and were happy with the selections available and especially the price. For families on a budget staying in Manhattan, this is a great place.
