After our first day in New York ever, my friend, her mother and me decided to go out to dinner. We chose La Tarte Flambee. Our waiter was very nice and helpful. The owner was also present, scraping out a pumpkin for Halloween while his personnel was running around. All orders took a bit long to arrive but we could see the waiters made an effort. I had lamb chops and an onion soup as a starter. All was very good. When my friend wanted to pay the bill, the owner said to her that she should pay at least 25% tip, because he was paying his staff $4 per hour. We hadn't been to America before and questioned ourselves but in the same time to us that seemed very rude. Paying your staff only $4 per hour, mentioning that to your guests + asking for 25% tip. And it wasn't as if the prices were low. They were not. The experience had gone from good to bad. We haven't given 25% tip and we left. We felt bad for the staff though.
I first went to this restaurant at their upper east side location, now closed. I have also gone to this location on 33rd 4 or 5 times. The time before last I thought the restaurant was a bit dirty but went back yesterday in the hopes that I was wrong. I wasn't. The table tops are dirty to look and touch. The plates on the table when you sit down are likewise, though they take them away when the food arrives. The entire place feels worn, with a "we're not paying attention to the details any longer vibe." I won't be going back. Sorry. It was good when it was good.
We had a lovely Sunday brunch here on a cold day in March. The location is tiny and can be a bit loud- but since we chose the late seating, we realized what we were in for! Though we were sat a bit late, we were happy to wait since the team was so communicative. Once sat, we were delighted. We could not finish our mimosas fast enough for our generous server and the food was incredible. Ending the meal with the ridiculous S'more flambee ensured that this locale would be a favorite moving forward!
