I usually eat at Norsiah Kitchen for my craving for authentic Malay dishes: reasonably priced (in fact it's the cheapest around), good food portions adequate for adult male's appetite, tasty & spicy, friendly homely service. Then, by accident, I saw Chai on the opposite side of the car park at Pelham St & the banner attracted me with the phrase 'Malaysian cuisine'. The interior deco & furnishing ambience was two notches better than Norsiah, cosy & dim-lit. The owners & part-timer waitresses were very hospitable, friendly & polite. I ordered Penang Laksa & Char Koay Teow. Sadly, the laksa didn't taste authentic as compared to Laksa King at Racecourse Rd. The Koay Teow was also not fried to reflect Penang style ie not charred enough (no wok hei flavour), sauces used were a miss, texture of rice noodle was soggy & colour was dark (similar to Singapore char koay teow). Both were palatable but not authentic to its name, from Penang. Would I return for my second round, I doubt so? I hope the two lady owners can improve on the cookings with this constructive feedback of mine.
